Legislators Say Some School Districts Aren’t Providing School Meal Debt Info

(KNOX) – Some North Dakota legislators are saying that several school districts aren’t providing current figures on their school meal debt. Lawmakers on the audit and fiscal review committee were given reports from several agencies around the state.

One of those reports included the Department of Public Instruction looking at unpaid school meal money. A spokesperson for the department says they’ve only received debt reports for less than 80 school districts out of nearly 200.

Some lawmakers argue the issue of figuring out meal debt for school districts should be left to local school boards, and that the topic of school meal debt may be irrelevant if voters approve an idea for universal free school lunches this November.
