(KNOX) – A Northern Minnesota town will be shutting down its police department. Blackduck, located in Beltrami County, announced they will close down the department after more than a century of service.
The Blackduck City Council says they are making the decision because of ongoing staffing challenges and rising costs. Blackduck has 800 residents, and the city was operating with a part-time police chief, one part-time officer and a single squad car.
Since 2016, roughly 40 law enforcements agencies across Minnesota have had to shut down their police departments, as rural communities are struggling to recruit and retain officers. These communities have had to rely on county sheriff’s offices or regional partnerships for coverage.
