Environmental Quality Allocates Funds to Mitigate Pollution in North Dakota

(KNOX) – The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality has allocated $2.8 million in grant funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Nonpoint Source Program to support ten projects aimed at mitigating nonpoint source pollution. The projects will focus on implementing best management practices, providing educational events, and offering technical and financial support to improve water quality across the state.

The funded projects include:

Maple River Watershed – Implement best management practices to address water quality concerns in the Maple River Watershed, a tributary to the Red River in Cass County.
Wild Rice River PTMApp Prioritization Project – Implement best management practices in areas identified by the ND Prioritize, Target and Map application (PTMapp) in the Wild Rice River Watersheds in Sargeant County.
Bowman-Haley Watershed – Implement best management practices to restore and maintain the recreational uses on the Bowman-Haley Reservoir in Bowman
Park River Watershed – Implement best management practices to address water quality concerns in the Park River Watershed and mitigate harmful algal bloom concerns at Homme Dam in Walsh County.
Antelope Creek Watershed and Riparian Corridor of the Wild Rice River – Implement best management practices to improve water quality in the Antelope Creek Watershed and along the section of the Wild Rice River that runs through Richland County.
ND Envirothon – Educate student participants about natural resources and ecosystem function through an outdoor, immersive testing competition.
Menoken Farm – Minimizing Pesticide Use – Demonstrate and educate on diversified crop rotations with cover crops that reduce or eliminate pesticide use, benefiting water quality and soil health.
Red River Basin River Watch and River of Dreams – Provide watershed, water quality and nonpoint source pollution education to 11 high schools and 18 elementary schools.
Prairie Waters Education and Research Center – Provide environmental education for all ages, train teachers on water and natural resource curricula, and host professional workshops on water quality and nonpoint source pollution management.
ND Water Education – Provide environmental education to students and training for teachers on the impacts of nonpoint source pollution on North Dakota water resources.
