(AP) – Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has declared a peacetime emergency, ordering the Minnesota National Guard to provide support for emergency flood operations as areas across Southern Minnesota experience extreme flood conditions.

The state has received a request for National Guard assistance from the Le Sueur County Sheriff for logistics and operations support.

In Le Sueur County, the City of Waterville and surrounding community have experienced about 14-to-18 inches of rainfall. Water has reached uncontrollable levels in the Cannon River and area lakes. Residents have been evacuated and the flooding has caused significant damage.

Evacuations are occurring in Henderson, Minnesota, where the Minnesota River is expected to reach flood stage Wednesday.

Parts of Harriet Island are expected to be underwater from the rising Mississippi River.

For the third time since 2015, flood walls are going up in Delano.

Portions of Interstate 90 east of Austin face potential mudslides.

Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith toured the levee area in Carver, Minnesota Sunday.

To the west, the Big Sioux River near Sioux Falls has crested, allowing water levels to come down from flash flooding. Major streets have reopened. Residents are no longer being asked to conserve wastewater usage. I-29 has reopened from Sioux Falls to the Iowa state line.

Parks in Sioux Falls remain closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Flood warnings continue for rivers in South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota.
