GFPD exchanges gunshots with suspect (updated)

The North Dakota BCI is investigating the exchange of gunfire between Grand Forks police and a suspect this afternoon.

The GFPD SWAT team was attempting to execute a high risk search warrant on the 3300 block of Primrose Court around 2:15 p.m.  Upon seeing the officers, the male subject immediately opened fire.  Officers returned fire but no one was struck or injured during the exchange.  Authorities say the male then ran a short distance where he gave up and was taken into custody without further incident.  The GFPD identified the individual as 30-year-old Jeffrey Simpson Jr. of Grand Forks. 

The GFPD says there is no danger to the public.  Authorities urged residents to stay away from the area for several hours while investigators remained on the scene.

The GFPD says any further updates will be released by the ND BCI.
