ND House OKs amended bill to raise interstate speed limits

By Pat Sweeney Apr 10, 2023 | 4:56 PM

The North Dakota House today (Mon) approved amendments to a bill that would raise some speeding fines on North Dakota highways.

But one amendment also raises the speed limit on parts of the Interstate Highways to 80 miles an hour, from the current 75 miles-per-hour.

The House and Senate had earlier passed a bill for an 80-mile-per hour speed limit. But that was vetoed by Gov. Burgum, who said he could have supported it if there was a primary-enforcement seat belt law. The current law is secondary enforcement.

That seat belt law has now passed the Legislature.

West Fargo Republican Representative Ben Koppelman sponsored the original 80-mile-per-hour bill.

The bill passed the House 66-to-24. It now goes back to the Senate, to see if that chamber agrees.
