GF Schools: Business Manager & student survey

By Doug Barrett Apr 26, 2022 | 9:13 AM

The Grand Forks School District has a new Business Manager. The school board selected Brandon Baumbach for the job last night. Baumbach is currently the Vice-President of Business Development with the Grand Forks Economic Development Corporation.

In making the recommendation Superintendent Terry Brenner says the fact that Baumbach doesn’t have an accounting degree is not a problem.  “I have had conversations with West Fargo…Bismarck…and Mandan who all have a business manager without an accounting degrees and all are pleased with the leadership of the business office.  All of them have said the key in this transition is the number two position the accounting supervisor.”  Brenner says Baumbach’s seven years as president of the Emerado (ND) School Board was a plus.

Baumbach will replace Scott Berge who left in February for a job with Altru Health. He starts his new role May 9th at an annual salary of $130,000.

Grand Forks students are drinking less booze and smoking fewer cigarettes according to the latest Youth Risk Behavior Survey. The school board reviewed the survey findings last night (Monday).
The anonymous every other year survey suggests those who had one or more drinks in the past 30 days dropped from 12% in 2019 to 9%. Cigarette use slipped from 3.8% to 3.2%…and marijuana use declined from 7.7% to 5.9%.
Associate Superintendent Catherine Gillach says it’s a move in the right direction – but there’s more work to do.
One other finding suggests prescription drug use also slipped from 3.9% to 1.3%. The district uses the confidential survey to help develop educational materials.
