UND to raze and remodel additional campus buildings

By Doug Barrett Mar 4, 2021 | 9:13 AM

More changes could be coming to the University of North Dakota footprint.  The Grand Forks Planning and Zoning Commission gave preliminary approval last night (Wednesday) to a series of moves calling for the renovation and removal of several campus dorms.

In one request UND wants to demo McVey and West Halls in favor of two new buildings near Stanford and University Avenue.  Interim City Planner Ryan Brooks says it’s part of a facelift for the freshman dorm area.

Brooks says the new buildings would be closer to the roadway.  “It kind of defines the area with an open space in the middle.  Maybe make it so the outdoor space is more usable for events in the quad area.”

In separate action the P-and-Z also O-K’d a PUD that calls for the razing of Walsh… Squires…Bek…and Hancock along the 400 block of Oxford and Princeton in favor of a new building along University Avenue.

The recommendations go to the city council March 15th.
