(KNOX) – A Polk County dairy farmer is among 90 being honored for their quality of milk by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
He is Kevin Hanson.
Each year the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) recognizes dairy herds with low somatic cell counts (SCC). Somatic cells occur naturally and are not a food safety concern.
A low Somatic Cell Count is better for cheese production and the shelf life of bottled milk.
Dairy farmers monitor SCC because it can be used as a way of measuring the health of their cows.
