More U.S. counties experienced population gains than losses in 2023. The U.S. Census Bureau’s Vintage 2023 estimates of population and components of change were released this week.
Approximately 60% of U.S. counties gained population from 2022 to 2023 – an increase from the 52% of counties that experienced population growth between 2021 and 2022. On average, large and moderate-sized counties grew while small counties got smaller.
The Census report says the population of Grand Forks County grew by 287 over the year to 72,708. Across the river the data suggests Polk County lost 313 people and currently sits at 30,412.
Both showed slight declines compared to 2020 figures.
