North Dakota tax officials say interest in the $500 Primary Residence Credit remains strong. Homeowners can apply for the credit online until March 31st.
The North Dakota Tax Department says over 85,000 applications have come in to date. It’s estimated over 206,000 owners are eligible under the program.
Tax officials told members of the Interim Tax Relief Advisory Committee this week that it only takes 2 to 3 minutes to complete the application – and 99% of users give the process positive reviews.
Representative Glenn Bosch asked whether there was any conversation about automating the process to avoid having to opt-in? “Our property tax payers would appreciate that if we could do it. I don’t know if it would be practical or what it would take. I don’t want to go down that path if there are mechanics that’s can be overcome. We will never achieve 100% participation unless we can get to something like that.”
The legislature set aside over $103 million dollars for the program in the 2023-25 state budget.
The City of Grand Forks has started mailing out postcards to all homeowners as a reminder about the credit.
