By Doug Barrett Feb 5, 2024 | 8:49 AM

Two people escaped injury after their pickup went through the ice on Union Lake Sunday afternoon. The Polk County Sheriff’s Department says the vehicle crashed through about five inches of ice around 4:00 p.m. Both occupants were able to get out of the vehicle and make it to shore. There were no injuries. The PCSO says the vehicle is still in the lake completely submerged.

The latest event comes as Minnesota DNR officials issued yet another reminder about ice safety. Ice Safety Coordinator Nicole Biagi says it’s not just anglers that should pay attention to the warning.

At least eight kids under 10 years old have died in the past 25 years in Minnesota after falling through backyard ice.
