The return of the School Resource Officer program in East Grand Forks may be near. The city council agreed last night (Tuesday) to reinstall the program in schools.
The council voted back in September to suspend the SRO agreement with District 595 until changes were made to a new state law. The law cast doubts over whether SRO’s were able to use force to restrain a student who may cause harm.
City Administrator Reid Huttunen says under the MOU the district will pay $41,500 for the services for the remainder of the school year. “The school board will meet next week to review the SRO agreement. If we get an agreement we will wok as quickly as possible to have police back in the school.”
The agreement runs through June 30th.
