Grand Forks police responded to a north side residence early this morning in response to a welfare check.
When officers arrived on scene around 1:15 a.m. they encountered a man with a knife tied to his arm. Officers were able to de-escalate the situation and recovered two knives. The subject was transported to Altru Hospital.
Authorities say about two hours later they were called to the Altru ER regarding the same individual. The GFPD says the male was able to acquire another knife and was acting erratically and threatening self-harm. Officers were able to talk the man into dropping the knife. As they approached the subject he lunged for the knife and officers deployed two non-lethal impact munitions.
The subject was evaluated for minor injuries and detained for psychiatric treatment. No officers or bystanders were injured.
