Grand Forks sales tax collections for the 2020 budget year fell just shy of the previous 12 month period. The January check came in at $2,276,525.17. Finance officials were projecting a much steeper decline due to the COVID pandemic. The local tax performed better than forecast in all areas except the ¼ percent restaurant/lodging portion which tumbled 18%.
The January payment completes the 2020 budget cycle.
Finance Director Maureen Storstad says “As I look to collections specifically in the last 9 months of the year as compared to the same 9 month period in 2019, collections were down 2.32%, and in last 6 months down 5.1%. All things considered, sales tax performed better than we had once projected.”
