The Federal Communications Commission is proposing an $867,000 fine against a telecommunications company for allegedly failing to send 911 calls to public safety centers after two 911 outages in the Dakotas. The F-C-C says on Feb. 17, 2022, Lumen Technologies had an outage affecting 911 calls in South Dakota for almost five hours -- but did not notify two affected public safety centers until days afterward. Five days later, Lumen had another 911 outage impacting the Bismarck (ND) area for more than seven hours. The F-C-C says Lumen notified only two of eleven affected call centers in a timely manner. The Commission says its investigation found that Lumen apparently willfully and repeatedly violated F-C-C rules and created “a significant threat to the life and property of tens of thousands of people.” The F-C-C says Louisiana-based Lumen will have a chance to respond. The Commission will consider Lumen’s submission of evidence and legal arguments before acting further to resolve the matter.
