HPAI confirmed in MN turkey flock

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been identified in a commercial turkey flock in Minnesota.

Samples of the Meeker County flock were confirmed positive by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Veterinary Services Lab. The site is quarantined, and the 140,000 birds on the premises were depopulated to prevent the spread of the disease.

State Veterinarian Dr. Brian Hoefs says unfortunately HPAI seems to keep popping up during seasonal migrations. Hoefs says before the latest detection the most recent cases were in the spring of this year.

Bird flu last year cost U.S. poultry producers nearly 59 million birds across 47 states.
