In an effort to ensure students have transportation to school the Grand Forks council has reviewed a Joint Powers Agreement with Valley Bus to provide drivers in times of shortages.
Valley has assumed the contract previously held by Dietrich Bus – who also requested city drivers for certain routes. Under the agreement the bus company assumes all costs and overtime for city employees when behind the wheel of a school bus.
Cities Area Transit officials say they have several drivers who are willing to help out – short term. At a recent meeting City Council President Dana Sande expressed some frustration with what seems to be an ongoing request. “I think the school district should figure out their own bus drivers. They are not our responsibility. But I agree that somebody has to stand up and take responsibility that we have bus drivers.” Sande floated the idea of only committing to the program until December 31st rather than the entire 2023-24 school year…
The council has agreed to the short term arrangement until the end of the year.
The Grand Forks School Board reviewed the agreement last night (Monday).
