The Grand Forks Police Department is warning the public about a potential scam making the rounds.
Authorities say they have been notified of several bogus phone calls where a person impersonates a GFPD sergeant or sheriff’s deputy. The caller states that there is an outstanding warrant and that the victim needs to make payment or they will be arrested.
GFPD:
Law Enforcement will NOT call you to make payment.
Law Enforcement will NOT request payment in Gift Cards to be sent over the phone.
Law Enforcement will NOT request payment sent electronically via Bitcoin/Crypto machines.
In a Facebook post the GFPD advises recipients to advise the caller that you will be contacting the identified agency to verify their identity and then HANG UP.
