The latest request for an electronic billboard on South Washington in Grand Forks sparked debate at this week’s Planning and Zoning Commission meeting over the growing popularity of the video signage.
Commission member Megan Sande was among those who questioned the number of signs coming before the P & Z. “When you drive around our city – and I am hearing this from other people – they are everywhere.”
Grand Forks currently has a cap on the number of billboards based on a population formula. That number increased by eleven after the most recent census count. City Planner Ryan Brooks says the ordinance was put in place decades ago and updated by the city council last year. “In this case there were 11 more under that to a total of 112…and there are more to come.”
The P & Z approved the 11 X 27 foot digital billboard for 1011 South Washington on a 5-3 vote. The council will review the request on August 21st.
