MN Republicans request special session

By Doug Barrett Jul 31, 2023 | 7:46 AM

A group of Minnesota House Republicans are urging Governor Tim Walz to call a targeted special session to deal with the state’s new recreational marijuana law.

In a letter to the governor the lawmakers are raising a couple of issues. They include penalties for possession and consumption of marijuana for those under 21 years of age. The group would also like to see guidelines providing local communities with broader and permanent regulatory authority. They also want to close the loophole between when consumption is legalized and a regulated retail market is established.

According to the group problems have already emerged from the “hastily crafted” piece of legislation. Minnesota’s legal pot law begins tomorrow (Tuesday).
