Visitor Injured at Theodore Roosevelt National Park

By Doug Barrett Jul 18, 2023 | 11:54 AM

A Minnesota woman is hospitalized after a run-in with a buffalo at the Painted Canyon Trailhead of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park this past Saturday.

The National Park Service says the victim was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Dickinson and later transported to a hospital in Fargo. The woman sustained significant injuries to her abdomen and foot.

The incident is still under investigation and the exact details as to what happened are not fully known at this time.

Park Superintendent Angie Richman reminds visitors that bison are large, powerful, and wild animals. They can turn quickly and easily outrun humans. Bulls can be aggressive during the rutting season – mid-July through August. Use extra caution and give them additional space during this time.
