The director of the North Dakota’s Career and Technical Education Office says it appears the state could finally have the approval to use federal COVID relief money for career academies across the state.
The 2021 Special Legislative Session approved $68 million for those academies from the relief funds. But it needs federal approval. CTE director Wayde Sick says he has now received word that Treasury is in the final stages of approving the use of that money for the academies.
Sick says that will mean the projects approved for the federal money won’t have to access the line of credit through the Bank of North Dakota – which the Legislature approved as a contingency. He says there has been some concern about “construction inflation.” Sick says the Legislature also addressed that. “Unused broadband money as of October 18th…those dollars can be used to offset inflationary impacts.”
Sick says that could be between $7 million and $8 million.
The Grand Forks City Council is expected to approve the transfer of land to the Grand Forks School District tonight (Monday) for construction of a Career Impact Academy project. The local CIA project will located on North 43rd Street near Gateway and I-29.
