North Dakota could become the 34th state to enact laws that make it illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone under age 21. A bill before the Senate Judiciary Committee today (Wednesday) would align the state with federal language that moves the age to buy tobacco from 18 to 21.
State Senator Mike Dwyer told committee members it’s the right thing to do.
Senator Jason Heitkamp says he doesn’t like cigarettes but he considers it “taking rights away from people who I think should have rights.”
The committee gave the bill a “do pass” recommendation on a 5-2 vote.
The measure contains an emergency clause that would allow it to take effect immediately upon passage and signing of Governor Doug Burgum.
