A fifth grade student at Discovery Elementary School in Grand Forks has been selected as the North Dakota AAA School Safety Patroller of the Year.
Nolan Richau received a plaque and a $200 gift card during a school assembly this week.
The award recognizes safety patrollers who best exemplify leadership qualities and perform their duties effectively and responsibly — without incident.
Nominees submit an essay, which is judged on content, understanding of traffic safety, sincerity, and organization of ideas.
Nolan wrote in his essay: “Being a member of the AAA Safety Patrol has helped me to learn more about my passions. It has helped me build relationships and friendships. It has helped me become a better leader in my school and community.”
The AAA School Safety Patrol Program began in 1920 and includes more than 679,000 patrollers in 35,000 U.S. schools.
AAA introduced the Patroller of the Year awards in 2002.
