The Grand Forks council is considering a one-time retention initiative to reward employees of the Public Service Answering Point as the group struggles through workforce challenges.
Under the plan full-time employees would receive a $2,000 dollar bonus and part-time employees $500 dollars. The cost of the program would be $26,000 dollars.
Council member Danny Weigel says he supports the idea but prefers a longer term solution by addressing salaries.
In other council action members gave preliminary approval to the transfer of land to the school district for the new Career Impact Academy. The land sits near Gateway and I-29. Construction on the CIA is expected to begin this fall.
The Grand Forks council also appears to be settling on revised language for citizen comments at future meetings. The issue generated more discussion at last night’s committee of the whole meeting. City Attorney Dan Gaustad says the revised policy would apply to all public meetings. The council will offer two citizen comment periods: one prior to action items on the agenda…and the other for general comments at the end of the meeting. In addition speakers would still face a five minute time limit and public decorum rules would come into play. The council is expected to finalize the guidelines at their next meeting in June.
