The University of North Dakota has hired a compliance liaison officer to assist with ongoing repatriation efforts on campus.
Mary Baker comes to UND from the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Tribal Historic Preservation Office in New Town (ND). She previously served as the Three Affiliated Tribes officer for the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act on the Fort Berthold Reservation.
In August of last year, UND President Andrew Armacost announced the discovery of ancestral remains and cultural artifacts on campus. Under federal law the items must be returned to their appropriate tribal homes. After the public announcement, the University developed a repatriation website, contracted with a Native American-owned management firm and consulted with UND’s Indigenous community.
UND President Andrew Armacost says Baker will play a vital role in maintaining the transparency needed for successful repatriation.
