Dasher boards from the University of Denver are due to arrive in East Grand Forks later this week with the goal of establishing an outdoor rink near the Blue Line Club for the 2023-24 skating season.
The city council reviewed the latest cost estimates for constructing the complex last night (Tuesday). Two options are on the table: a concrete dasher board foundation at a cost of $175,300 dollars…..or a full concrete floor at $267,800 dollars.
The full concrete slab is the preferred option if the money can be found. It would allow the rink to be used for other activities during the summer.
One casualty of the plan is the possible closure of the outdoor rink at Stauss Park. Park and Rec’s Reid Huttenen says he never wants to lose a recreational amenity. “It is the biggest concern I have with this project…the ability to maintain it properly. I don’t see it being successful if it’s three – or three different outdoor rinks – with current staff and work load.”
No decisions were made at last night’s work session.
