American Crystal to close production plant

By Doug Barrett Feb 6, 2023 | 12:19 PM

American Crystal Sugar will shutter the processing plant in Sidney (MT) later this year.

The company says there is no longer adequate interest in growing sugar beets to sustain the operations – and plant closure procedures will begin on April 14th.

In a prepared statement Crystal says in the 1990s, contracts for sugar beets with the local growers had reached as many as 45,000 acres. Last year there were only 18,400 acres contracted.

The company informed employees of the decision today.

The factory typically has around 300 workers on the payroll.
