A bill is making its way through the North Dakota House designed to drive home the point about safety when it comes to disabled vehicles on the side of the road.
The legislation would require motorists to slow down…and move over…when they approach vehicles with flashing lights on. The current law only applies to emergency vehicles.
Bill author Representative Austen Schauer says 90% of drivers already do the right thing.
It’s estimated there are around a dozen crashes every year in North Dakota involving a stationary vehicle.
The Triple-A’s Gene LaDoucer says the goal is to provide a buffer of safety. “A Triple-A survey of drivers last fall found 36% were either unsure or thought there was no move over law in the state.”
The bill would carry a $20 dollar fine. It would apply to all multi-lane highways outside city limits.
The House Transportation Committee has given the bill a DO PASS recommendation on a 12-2 vote.
