San Jose man found guilty of robbing Bismarck bank

A 38-year-old California man accused of robbing a Bismarck bank has been found guilty in federal court after a two-day trial.

Authorities say Robert Wolter of San Jose was in disguise when he robbed the bank In January 2019.

Three weeks later, Wolter was at the Newark, New Jersey airport, intending to fly to Ghana, Africa. During an examination by Customs and Border Protection, Wolter under-declared the amount of money in his possession.

While Wolter was in custody in New Jersey, further investigation in San Jose led to the discovery of evidence related to the robbery. Wolter was indicted in April 2019.

The bank robbery charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.

Sentencing is pending.
