ACT test scores drop in pandemic slide

By Doug Barrett Oct 13, 2022 | 8:16 AM

ACT test scores reveal a decline in preparedness for college-level coursework. Overall, the average ACT composite score was 19.8 out of 36.

This year was the first time since 1991 that the average score was below 20, and it was the lowest average in more than 30 years.  The results offer a lens into systemic inequities in education, in place well before the pandemic shuttered schools and colleges waived testing requirements.

ACT says North Dakota’s composite score was 19.2% with 97% of students taking the test.  Minnesota scored a 21 with a 69% of students testing.  Generally speaking states with a higher percentage of students participating had lower scores.

The Grand Forks School District reports the local composite score was 20.3.
