Although no decision has been made the Grand Forks County Commission has asked staff to look into the cost of demolishing the downtown county parking ramp.
A recent report from consultants suggests the structure needs some $2.4 million dollars in immediate repairs – with a 20 year maintenance plan pegged at $5.1 million. The report characterized the ramp to be in poor condition for its age.
County Administrator Tom Ford told board members this week that just over 200 of the 330 stalls are leased. “At the end of the day it would be cheaper and more cost effective for flat surface parking. The other thing I would bring up is which ever route the commission wants to go to seriously consider pay-for-parking to help with ongoing maintenance.”
Several commission members indicated the demo costs could play a major role in deciding how to proceed.
The commission admits a decision is expected sooner rather than later.
