Bismarck man seriously hurt in ATV-locomotive collision

By Pat Sweeney Aug 4, 2022 | 4:13 PM

A 32-year-old Bismarck man sustained serious injuries this (Thu) morning when the ATV he was driving was struck by a BNSF train about 10 miles northwest of Mandan.

At about 10:30 AM, the ATV was eastbound on a gravel road, when it crossed the tracks at a marked railroad crossing…and was hit by a locomotive pulling 70 cars — some with freight; some empty.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the locomotive was traveling about 25 miles an hour.

The ATV driver was transported by ambulance to a Bismarck hospital. He was not wearing a helmet.

The train engineer and conductor – both from Bismarck — were not injured.

This crash remains under investigation.
