Due to pending investigations, there is limited new information regarding circumstances surrounding the recent death by suicide of 48-year-old Chad Isaak at the North Dakota State Penitentiary in Bismarck.
Isaak was serving four concurrent life sentences in the shooting and stabbing deaths of four people at a property management company in Mandan in 2019.
A Department of Corrections spokeswoman says, at the time of his death on Sunday, Isaak was housed in the prison’s south unit. He had a roommate but the roommate was not in the cell at the time of the incident.
Isaak had one minor pending disciplinary report in his file, and no previous incidents on his record during his incarceration.
Prior to Isaak’s death, the last suicide reported at the facility occurred on July 6, 2021.
The medical, psychological, and treatment records of inmates are confidential and may not be disclosed under state law.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol is conducting the external investigation into Isaak’s death.
The Department of Corrections is also conducting its own internal investigation.
