Moving Bakken gas to eastern North Dakota

By Doug Barrett Jun 20, 2022 | 8:38 AM

North Dakota Pipeline Authority director Justin Kringstad says there’s still a lot of interest in a pipeline to bring Bakken natural gas to eastern North Dakota.

North Dakota would provide $150 million in seed money for the project. But the state Industrial Commission had to extend the deadline until August 15th, after WBI Energy backed out.

Kringstad says the urgency surrounding the need for more gas in eastern North Dakota is still there.  “We are talking with some folks in the Red River Valley trying to figure out who could use that gas.  The key is getting all parties aligned so it can support a project of that scale.  The urgency is still there and interest is still quite high.”

Some community leaders in eastern North Dakota say the availability of natural gas helps determine if industrial projects decide to come to their cities.

Viking Gas is utilizing a $10 million dollar state grant to build a pipeline to provide additional gas to Grand Forks from its Minnesota network.
