Fines for speeding in ND construction zones questioned

By Doug Barrett Jun 1, 2022 | 8:57 AM

The Memorial Day weekend is the traditional kick-off to the busy summer driving season.  This year it was also a dangerous start with a number of fatality crashes.

It came days after North Dakota transportation officials urged motorists to slow down and stay alert – with an emphasis on construction zones.  The fine for speeding in a construction zone starts at $80 dollars.

Russ Hanson of the Associated General Contractors of North Dakota says the state hasn’t increased those fines since 2003.  “Fines in construction zones and in general tend to be less than other states.  As the legislature comes back maybe it’s not the entire answer but maybe it’s time to have than discussion.”

DOT Director Bill Panos says there are three keys for reducing road deaths:  Administrative control and enforcement…engineering tools to improve safety…plus behavior and education.
