Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz was joined by lawmakers, commissioners, small business owners and frontline workers at the Capitol today (Mon) for a bill-signing ceremony.
It celebrated the Legislature’s passage of a bipartisan bill giving bonuses to workers on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic … and replenishing the state’s unemployment insurance trust fund.
Walz thanked lawmakers on both sides of the aisle for reaching a compromise.
“That is no small thing,” Walz said, “and I know often I’ve said it, and some of these folks have said it, you shouldn’t get patted on the back for doing what you’re supposed to do. Doing what you’re supposed to do was hard in this case, and they did it.”
The deal includes $2.7 billion to refill the trust fund … and $500 million in bonuses of about $750 each for those whose jobs were deemed essential and who worked in-person.
