Tax deadline day has arrived…maybe

By Doug Barrett Apr 18, 2022 | 9:17 AM

Millions of Americans wait right up to the deadline to file their taxes and this year will be no exception.

The executive director of the National Society of Tax Professionals, Nina Tross, says if people haven’t filed their taxes by now they’re better off filing an extension. Tross adds that filing an extension has “zero effect” as long as filers have paid their income taxes by Tax Day. Tross warns that rushing a return to meet the deadline only to have to amend it later is likely to draw a second look by the IRS.

Due to recent storms North Dakota tax filers have until April 25th to file their state income tax returns. In 2021, the North Dakota Tax Department processed over 480,000 individual income tax returns.

North Dakota’s Congressional team has written a letter to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig requesting an extension and waiver of penalties for late returns from state residents due to the severe blizzard affecting much of the state.
