The Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Department fielded a record number of calls for service in 2021 – but that doesn’t mean crime was up. The phone rang 22,080 times last year. That compares to 19,965 in 2020 and fewer than 12,500 in 2016.
GFSO Captain Joel Lloyd says the department spends a substantial amount of time on civil paper services. “Which is followed by traffic stops and location checks. They are security patrols especially in rural towns who don’t have police services. In 2022 we plan to focus a lot of time on those three categories because they all play a role in high visibility patrols.”
Lloyd says there were no major shifts in the various crime categories last year. He says drug related arrests have been slowly falling – and that’s a good thing.
Deputies did issue 1,392 speeding citations and warnings in 2021 – up by more than 300. The department also made 90 DUI arrests.
