MN lawmakers consider redesign of state flag, seal

A bill that would create a commission to develop a new Minnesota State Flag and State Seal has cleared its first hurdle.

A House committee approved the bill 8-to-5 along party lines today (Tue) and sent it to the House Ways and Means Committee.

The measure would create a “State Emblems Redesign Commission” to recommend new designs reflecting Minnesota’s history, resources, and diverse cultural communities.

The current flag and seal include images of a farmer and an Indian. Critics say the designs are too complicated and indistinguishable from others.

The 14-member commission would include four legislators, three people appointed by the governor, and other members representing various ethnic councils.

The bill calls for a report to the governor by Jan. 1, 2023.
