Emerado crews investigate electrical fire

By Doug Barrett Mar 19, 2022 | 11:09 PM

An electrical box fire kept the Emerado Volunteer Fire Department busy this afternoon.  Crews were dispatched to 206 6th Street, Unit B in Emerado around 3:15 p.m. for a residential fire.  Fire teams were advised an electrical box behind the unit was on fire.

The department responded with 3 apparatus and 9 firefighters. Personnel from Nodak Electric also arrived on scene.

An electrical meter on the west side of the structure suffered apparent fire damage. Firefighters removed the cover from the meter panel to gain access and discovered the fire had burned itself out.  The electricity was shut off to the home at the breaker panel to prevent further electrical issues. Firefighters were unable to terminate power from the main power line to the meter.   The fire did not spread into the home.

While conducting the investigation, firefighters observed electrical arcing at the electrical meter, which caused the fire to ignite again. Firefighters extinguished the fire and monitored the scene. Nodak Electric arrived on scene and terminated power from the main line into the electrical meter preventing further arcing or ignition.

All occupants of the home evacuated safely, and no injuries were reported.

The Emerado Volunteer Fire Department was assisted on scene by Altru Ambulance, the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office and Nodak Electric.
