East Grand Forks is reviewing a Memo of Understanding to use the Blue Line Arena as a temporary jail. The Northwest Regional Correctional Center has requested the city approve the agreement in the event of an emergency short-term evacuation of inmates.
Park and Rec Superintendent Reid Huttunen says the correctional center already has two potential back-up sites in Crookston. “It would not be used for longer than 12 hours and it would be contingent on the availability of the building.”
The M-O-U has been reviewed by the city attorney and chief of police. The city council is expected to act on the request next week.
