MN traffic fatality count climbs in 2021

By Doug Barrett Feb 10, 2022 | 6:59 AM

Minnesota recorded nearly 500 road deaths in 2021 according to figures from the Department of Public Safety.

Director Mike Hanson delivered the sobering news to members of the House Finance and Policy Committee.  It’s also the first time the figure has topped the 400 mark since 2015.

Hanson says speed was the largest contributing factor in fatal crashes last year.  “Roughly 60% of the fatalities occur outside the metro area.  Speed is a primary contributing factor.  We’ve seen an uptick in unbelted fatalities as well.  That combination is deadly.”

Hanson says there are a few positives in the annual report in that distracted and impaired driving were down last year.
