Fufeng agreement sparks resident opposition

By Doug Barrett Feb 1, 2022 | 7:46 AM

Dozens of residents from Falconer Township showed up at last night’s (Monday) Grand Forks council meeting to hear more about plans to locate a corn milling facility in their backyard.

The council got its first glimpse at a development agreement with the Fufeng Group.

Supporters point to the over 200 jobs the project will bring to the region.  In exchange for landing the plant the city is investing in infrastructure and providing tax incentives.

Fufeng will also require upwards of 6.6 million gallons of raw water per day from the Red River.  City Administrator Todd Feland says that falls within existing state permits and the proposed Red River Water Supply project will only bolster water availability.

Many of those who crowded into the council chambers spoke out against the project.  City leaders noted this is the first step and there will be numerous public hearings down the road for the public to voice concerns.
