
A contingent from the Grand Forks LGBTQ community showed up at last night’s council meeting in support of UND’s effort to draft a gender inclusion policy. The show of support followed the recent criticism of the draft document by the North Dakota Catholic Conference and Mayor Brandon Bochenski.
The policy would require the use of a transgender person’s preferred pronouns…bathrooms…and other living facilities that align with a person’s gender identity.
Following the discussion Mayor Bochenski issued an apology for his choice of words on the issue. “Undoubtedly my words were unduly harsh. To be able to site here and listen and learn…I appreciate the deeply personal stories everyone shared.”

In other council action members set a public hearing for March 7th on a tax incentive plan to bring the Olive Ann Boutique Hotel to downtown Grand Forks.
City Attorney Dan Gaustad also informed the council that work continues on a development agreement with the Fufeng group to bring a corn milling plant to Grand Forks. Gaustad aid a meeting between the two sides last Thursday made progress – but there is still some work to be done. He said the document might be ready for a special council meeting the week of January 31st.
