No changes were made to the plans for removing the mask mandate for students and staff in the Grand Forks School District later this month.
The school board reviewed the current timeline during a Smart Restart update last night (Monday).
Face masks will still be recommended…but not required…for K-12 students and employees during the instructional day starting January 18th.
Board member Jackie Hassett says with rising COVID-19 cases it seems a bit odd to be removing masks. “The last seven days I believe in the state we saw the highest number of student cases.”
Board President Dr. Eric Lunn says COVID-19 isn’t going away. “At some point…and I think you are seeing it across the U.S….society has to open back up. The other thing that is disconcerting now is the latest research on cloth masks show it really doesn’t do much for this variant.”
Masks will be required for programs that include immunocompromised students…Head Start programs…and on school/city buses.
