The Department of Defense has inked a contract with Northrup Grumman to convert four Global Hawk Block 20’s at Grand Sky with sensors to be used for hypersonic missile testing.
U.S. Senator John Hoeven says repurposing the aircraft is more efficient and an important step in advancing the Sky Range program in North Dakota.
In a prepared statement Hoeven says the current practice uses an aging fleet of ships deployed across a Pacific Ocean corridor to test hypersonic missiles. The DOD is only able to conduct four to six tests per year, as it takes several weeks to deploy and position the ships for each test.
