Storm improves GF odds for a white Christmas

By Doug Barrett Dec 7, 2021 | 8:00 AM

Sunday’s blizzard most likely ensures that the Grand Forks area will have a white Christmas this year.  Despite the Climate Prediction Center’s 8 to 14 day outlook of temps trending above normal – the nearly eight inches of snow that blanked the ground is probably here to stay.

A white Christmas is defined as having at least 1 inch of snow on the ground at     7:00 a.m. local time Christmas Day.  Over the years the NWS says Grand Forks has an 84% chance of having a white Christmas.  That compares to 80% in Minot…78% for Fargo…and 70% in Bismarck.

The weekend storm prompted many schools to start classes two hours late and closed I-29 from the Canadian border to the South Dakota line.
