FDA panel to review need for boosters

By Doug Barrett Sep 16, 2021 | 8:30 AM

To boost or not to boost?  Some scientists are at odds over whether COVID booster shots are actually needed in the general adult population.  Pfizer’s analysis says immunity wanes six to eight months after the second dose.

Around 25% of the new COVID cases in Minnesota during the past week involved breakthrough cases.  Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm says many of those were in the 65 and older crowd.  Malcolm says there is a lot of transmission happening right now.  “The fact is folks over 65 are among the first vaccinated and the longest out from that initial series of vaccinations.  At what intervals will boosters be recommended for different populations perhaps.”

Minnesota health officials say it’s important to look at the whole picture and vaccines work.  It’s estimated that fully vaccinated people are 4.5 times less likely to be infected and 10 times less likely to be hospitalized.

An FDA advisory panel meets tomorrow (Friday) to discuss the need for booster shots.
